Here is a brief introduction to vitalism from a chiropractic perspective.  This helps people understand chiropractic’s stance on health and where it comes from.

Vitalism is defined as:  The theory or doctrine that life processes arise from or contain a nonmaterial vital principle and cannot be explained entirely as physical and chemical phenomena.

Vitalistic principle holds that the human organism can keep itself healthy if there are no barriers to full expression of all its vital functions. The body has the innate ability to heal itself from within.

The life force (or Innate Intelligence) emanates throughout the body through the nervous system. The nervous system, in a sense, is the conduit of the life force. By adjusting the spine and other joints through which the life force passes (the spine itself is a series of joints}, chiropractors see themselves as removing barriers or obstacles to the full expression of this life force, thereby allowing the functioning necessary for health.

The vitalistic model distinguishes chiropractic from the conventional medical model. Unlike in allopathy and western medicine, chiropractors do not directly treat disease. They facilitate the body’s own restorative powers. The vital force cannot be measured scientifically. But it is something chiropractors believe in. Vital force is a major premise of chiropractic.

A lot of critics of chiropractic say that we don’t have science to back up what we do.  First off, they are wrong, we have a lot of solid science.  We just don’t have the Today Show and every other news station highlighting our research.  Secondly, when we look at vitalism, and it’s components, it is not easily studied.  We know certain things exist, but they can’t be explained or even measured.

Chiropractic is way ahead of it’s time.  In fact, we were talking about quantum physics before the physicists were discovering it.  The “New Science” of quantum physics is destroying the “old” model of Newtonian physics.  Chiropractic’s philosophy uses this new science in explaining how healing can come about with the chiropractic adjustment.

Contrary to the old medical philosophy that breaks the body down into parts that can be individualized and manipulated, chiropractic’s philosophy is that we, as humans, are greater than the sum of our parts.  The whole is not the sum of it’s parts, but greater than the sum of it’s parts.

What does this mean to you?  It means that unless you remove the interference (ie. subluxations) to the expression of life force, then you cannot express health.  You can only express health by having all interference removed through a chiropractic adjustment.

I hope you learned something here about our philosophy of care.  Yes, it might have been “new thinking” for you, but test what I’ve shared with you and look for yourself.  Enjoy the journey!
